***Flashing Lights: Our Time Is Now!***

Illuminating the talents of new artists; independent rhythm with a mainstream flair!

The light’s on: Rudy Currence!!

For anyone who loves R&B/soul music as much as I do, look no closer than to Rudy Currence! As a member of BET’s Music Matters campaign, this Rock Hill, SC native has what it takes to becoming the next big thing in music!

Born with the gift of music, Currence began singing at the age of three, under the influence of his father and began playing the piano at the age of six. In addition to his father, Currence grew up listening to and was inspired by likes of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, The Carpenters and The Clark Sisters. Blessed with the diverse, musical background of R&B, gospel, jazz and blues, folk, pop and classical, Currence released two independent albums, More Than You’ll Ever Know and Here with You on Mike Check Entertainment and has blessed the albums of Mya and Ray J with his extraordinary songwriting abilities.

Recently, Currence performed his hit, Zion on BET’s 106 & Park; a soulful ballad of self-reflection, growth and overcoming the many struggles we face in life. In the song, he touches on those in the church and their opinions on him crossing over to the secular realm. “God is bigger than the four walls of the church,” Currence stated on the hip-hop countdown show, “and I still carry positivity in my music.” Currence also announced that he was currently signed to rapper, Ludacris’ Disturbing Tha Peace label, which for Currence, is a good look.

“When I first heard Rudy’s music, it didn’t even remind me of a specific artist; it just reminded me of a specific time frame IN music,” says the CEO of DTP. “Where you talk about just raw vocal ability and raw music ability and that’s what I love so much about him because he’s raw, uncut, he don’t need no studio effects or any of that stuff. What you see is what you get; what you hear is what you get. 100%; it’s Rudy Currence…”

When asked what he hoped to accomplish with DTP and his career, Currence said with that adorable smile, “I wanna take over the world! I wanna win Grammy’s! I wanna be multi-platinum!” Confident yet humble, soft-spoken but vocals that come from the depths of his soul, Rudy Currence is what the game has been missing and definitely well on his way to reaching those goals and I hope after hearing her voice, you’ll agree and help insure that he’ll be here to stay!

Ø Mariah Carey Confirms Pregnancy!!!

After months and months of speculation and dodging the bullet, R&B songstress Mariah Carey and her hubby, Nick Cannon finally confirmed that they are indeed pregnant!! Earlier today (October 28th), the Today Show aired a snippet of a three-part Access Hollywood interview, confirming that the couple are expecting their 1st child in Spring 2011.

"Yes we are pregnant, this is true!" she told host Billy Bush in her New York City apartment. "It's been a long journey, but it's been tough because I've been trying to have ... to hold onto a shred of privacy. And that was not easy."

Mariah shared that there’s no official birth date for the baby but that she’s expecting her new bundle of joy before Summer ’11. "It's still early, I'm expecting in the spring, I'll say that. I don't want to give too much of like, specific outlines," she explained.

Cannon was also on hand for the interview, expressing his joy in being a father-to-be. "Uh, it's absolutely emotional, but first, so many reasons I mean obviously the greatest gift on earth is a child," Cannon said. "But ... you know how much we have been through, you know."

For the last couple years, rumors had been circulating about Mariah previously being pregnant and finally the couple came out and addressed the secret that Carey suffered a miscarriage. "Only one person knew about this and we were like, um, 'let's not tell anybody else," said Mariah. "It was really sad so we had to just, we had really to absorb this and take it in."

The full interview airs October 28th on Access Hollywood!

Ø Shyne Writes Apology Letter To L.A. Reid

A couple weeks ago, Shyne voiced his anger about Def Jam CEO L.A. Reid in an interview, accusing Reid of turning his back on hip-hop and not properly promoting the hip-hop artists under the label. After some time the reflect on what he said, Shyne issued an open apology letter on Wednesday to the man who signed him to a seven-figure deal after spending nearly a decade behind bars.

"I was wrong about my assessment of Chairman Reid," Shyne wrote. "After I stopped being all Carl Thomas emotional and things like that, I thought about the facts. Fact is L.A Reid was there when I was locked, a few feet away from death row and the Black Panthers. L.A. was on the visit floor on Rikers Island looking at me through them blinding bars, showing me hebelieved in that gang boy revolutionary music I make. "

Shyne stood firm with his loyalty to Reid by reflecting on the fact that the Def Jam CEO was responsible for selling millions of records and making stars out of Diddy and Jermaine Dupri. “I’m loyal to a fault! F*** it!! I’m rolling with L.A., he wrote. What’s funny though is that Shyne also praised Reid for molding legends like Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton and Usher, when in his previous rant, he dogged Reid for favoring R&B over hip-hop.

“I am so excited to take this next step in my career”, Rihanna told the Associated Press.

Ø Beyonce’s Mom Shoots Down Pregnancy Rumors

Ever since the two became one, Jay-Z and Beyonce have been dodging rumors that they are expecting their first child together. Last week, it was reported from a source that is close to The Carters that say that the couple is indeed expecting their first child.

On the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles stopped by later that week to set the record straight. "I heard that, but I'm here to clear the rumors up. The truth is it's not Beyonce that's pregnant -- it's me," joked the 56-year-old. "No, it's not true. Not right now. I'm looking forward to it. With all the rumors, by now I should have about five or six grandchildren."

One minute she is and the next she isn’t. With all the success that she’s accomplished in her career, the world is just ready for her focus on building her family enjoying that part of life. I guess the truth will come out once (or if) she starts showing. Stay tuned!

Ø Jazmine Sullivan Finds Strength in Honesty on Mary J. Blige Tour

For someone who has only been in the game for a couple years, Jazmine Sullivan’s music career has brought her many accomplishments. With hit singles, a Grammy nomination and a spot on Mary J. Blige’s Music Saved My Life tour, opening with new singer, Miguel and legendary El DeBarge, Sullivan has come a long way from the days in Philly.

"It's been wonderful, it's been therapeutic," she said during an interview with The Boombox; of touring with Blige. "That's one of the things you love about this tour, she's so real and she's so honest. She's been through everything that you're going through, that you've been through, and she can speak to you. When I was younger, I saw her in concert and she was bawling. I admired her for being that honest and that open with her audience. I think that's why people love her. That's something that I have not done yet -- been that honest -- because you gotta be really not scared to do that, but that's something one day that I would love to just do. Just let it out." Laterthat evening, Sullivan performed the appropriate song for her remark, a cover of SWV's 'Weak.'

The follow-up to her debut album, Fearless, Sullivan’s sophomore album, Love Me Back, focuses on both spectrums of relationships. Female fans have the opportunity to relate to the “break up” songs like, “Holding You Down” without being labeled as “man hater”. "I felt like I was probably a little one-sided with [my debut] 'Fearless,' because of the relationship I had just ended. I came off a little angry!" the Sullivan admits. "This time I want to show a softer side and a different side of relationships because every relationship isn't tumultuous."

Ø Wale Criticized For Loud, Profane Campus Concert

No stranger to controversy in regards to his performances, rapper Wale adds his latest show at the homecoming for the University of Mary Robinson to the list of upset onlookers.

Wale signed on to join the ranks at the outdoor homecoming concert for the university this past Saturday after being voted on by the student body. Unfortunately, not everyone was so receptive to the DC native’s style of rap. Reportedly, three residents did not find Wale’s graphic use of profanity and volume of the concert appealing causing the University’s President to send out a formal apology.

"Not only was the music extremely loud, but the language contained in the lyrics was upsetting to those who would not choose to attend a concert of this nature," wrote President Rick Hurley in a letter to Virginia's Free Lance-Star paper. "I am sorry that a high-spiritedweekend on campus ended on such a negative note for some of our closest neighbors who were offended by both the volume and the content of the music."

Wale previously went under fire after backing out of a $20,000 performance during the LGBT-sponsored Black Pride Festival in May; branding him as homophobic. Wale showed his remorse by performing a free show.

Ø Cleveland Radio Station Creates Bully-Free Air Zone

The recent wave of teen bullying and subsequent teen suicide has taken the country by storm; including the city of Cleveland. Since 2006, four students from Mentor High School have taken their own lives due to bullying. Fed up and ready for change, local hip-hop station, Z107.9 hosted the first, in what hopefully will become the national, “Bully-Free Air Zone”—a two hour show that focuses on teen bullying, violence and its effects.

"Whether it be cyber-bullying or physical or verbal, it's wrong and we just got to put an end to it," said station DJ Latin Assassin. "It's an issue that a lot of times gets swept under the rug. A lot of parents and children don't take it serious."

The show was hosted by child psychologist, Dr. Art LaPlace, who pointed out that almost one in every six school-aged children are bullied on a regular basis and feel as though they have no one to turn to.

Most stations would not think twice to cut off their regularly scheduled spins of Drake and Rick Ross, in order to address an issue that is killing our children so Z107.9 should be commended for their conscious effort to promote change. Besides the panel discussion with the hosts, teens and parents, the show also allows kids to call in a report suspected bullying directly on the air!

With the success of this show, let’s hope and pray that other radio stations across the nation will soon follow suit!

~* Fashion 411 *~

Being 6ft even and a proud size 16, I know all too well the struggles of finding clothes that compliment my full-size and properly accentuate my curvaceous figure. I decided to dedicate this issue of fashion to my fellow curvaceous mamas out the there in the world!! Just because we have a little more to love, doesn’t mean that we don’t have a sense of fashion or an awareness of what’s hot! And to help, here are 10 Fall 2010 Fashion Trends for Plus Size women!

1) High Heels

~ With high heeled shoes, they make your legs not only appear longer but leaner! Make sure you wear them with your dress pants, casual jeans and skirts!

2) Jeggings

~ As I stated before in a previous post, jeggings are the newest fall fashion trend sweeping the nation! A cross between jeans and leggings, jeggings can be worn with a pair of mid-calf, loose-fitting boots and your favorite top.

3) Fitted Cardigans and Blazers

~ One of the biggest mistakes we as plus size women make is wearing baggy, oversized sweaters and jackets. Unfortunately, what we don’t realize is that we are actually making ourselves look heavier than we really are! Let’s go for a fitted cardi or blazer that buttons just below the chest and above your belly button.

4) Wide-leg Pants

~While skinny jeans are all the rave in fashion, they really do not compliment the figure of a full-figured woman. Instead, choose a wide-leg, dark shade, like a chocolate, tan or coffee color that fits loosely over your thighs.

5) Scarves

~Ok ladies, you should be familiar with scarves after my piece on scarves two weeks ago but just in case you forget, here’s a refresher! It’s important to go with a color that compliments your hair color, makeup and complexion.

6) Darted Tops and Blouses

~Choose shirts with darted pleats just below the breast and near your natural waistline. By doing this, you accentuate you curves instead of making your body look more boxy and unflattering.

7) Animal Print Accessories

~It’s important to realize that these vibrant prints will draw attention to where you wear them so be cautious of overdoing them. If you have great arms, a leopard print purse would be a great accessory! If you someone that has a smaller waist, try pairing it with a great zebra print waist belt!

8) Slouch Boots

~If you are a curvy girl with thick calves, then these are the boots for you! They disguise any calf insecurities you may have and will look hot with a two of three inch heel!

9) A-line Skirts

~I love wearing skirts and one that does the full-figured woman justice is the A-line! The hemline falls at the smallest part of your leg and is the same width at the hip, giving you an overall slimmer appearance.

10) Dark-colored Jeans

~The best friend of the curvy diva is dark denim! Also giving you a slimmer, smoother appearance, dark-colored denim has the potential to be dressed up or jazzed down, depending on the occasion and your mood!

I hope these tips have helped you guys and I hope that maybe now my fellow curvaceous divas can walk through a store, more aware of their body and what it takes to make it look good! Remember, God gave us this beautiful canvas and when creating a masterpiece, it’s not the size of the canvas but what you do with it that counts!

~* Strategize, Accessorize, Mesmerize!*~

Accessories: the golden touch of fashion!

Spotlighting: Tights!!!

When we were younger, we dreaded wearing tights and resented our mothers for forcing the issue but now, tights are making a comeback! Long or short, our legs are one of the most important extremities on the human body so why not accessorize and dress them up for the fall and winter months!

With the popularity of tights back on the rise, designers are now creating more unique styles of tights, in new and exciting designs, colors and textures. Whether they are full-length or high-high, tights have the ability to jazz up a classic outfit or keep you warm and cozy on a cold, winter day. With a thin pair of lace tights, you could pair it with a pea coat dress and pumps or with a thick pair of tights, match it with a cardigan, short ruffle skirt and a pair of booties!

However you choose to wear them, have fun with you tights and be creative!

~*Street Swag!*~

If you consider yourself a fashion-forward individual who has the ability to turn heads with your impeccable style, then let’s show the world what you’re made of! If you stay funky fresh, dressed to impress, ready to party, you could be my Golden Trendsetter of the Week!! I want to spotlight and showcase the everyday trendsetter; the one who breaks through the rules of fashion to create their own boundaries. If that’s you, email me a picture, highlighting your unique style, along with a brief statement explaining what makes your style so unique to, SoGoldenBlog@gmail.com and I’ll be happy to share your style with the world!
